Accounts & Email Support

IITS does not issue any temporary UTSCid's. All U of T Scarborough students should have their own account. Any persons needing to use a computer to browse the web may do so at the Kiosks (Sun Rays) located in front of the Circulation desk in the Library. These machines will not prompt for a user name or password. If you are a teaching assistant or sessional instructor, you can issue a request for a guest account from the Student HelpDesk for the duration of the semester.

IITS does not issue any temporary UTORid's. All U of T Students should have their own account.   If you are a visitor staying for less than five days, a U of T staff member can then sponsor you an account.

To view the amount of available storage for your UTSCid, use this page.

Non-U of T Scarborough students can obtain visitors cards from the Reference desk in the library or from the Student Support Desk in B487.

You can verify the functionality of your UTORid using this form.  Any problems that may have existed with the account should be fixed afterwards.

There are many reasons why you may not be receiving emails in your UTSC email account.

  1. Your inbox has a quota of 25MB. If you exceed the quota, you will stop receiving e-mails.Use this form to check your usage, and delete emails if you have exceeded the 25MB limit.
  2. E-mails can be lost during the forwarding process.  To resolve this, disable your UTSC email forwarding.
  3. E-mails that contain attachments larger than 5MB or total message sizes greater than 10MB will not be received. Also, certain file-types (.exe, .pif, etc) can be removed as attachments.

If you are not receiving class emails sent by your instructor, please ensure that you have a @utoronto.ca e-mail address in ROSI.

Wireless Support

Specific instructions for PC's running Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Mac OSX can be found here.

It is highly recommended to have an 802.11n-compatible card, though 802.11a/g/n are all supported. To ensure your personal computer is secure enough, be sure to install all pending Windows updates and an antivirus software if you run a PC, or install all Mac OS system updates if you run a Mac.

There are more than 50 wireless access points installed throughout UTSC, which provide complete coverage around the campus. You can find a map indicating the number of current users here. Please visit the Student HelpDesk to inqure about setuping your personal device for wireless access.

Wireless printing is available as long as you are connected and authenticated to the wireless network.  Please see the Wireless Printing page for detailed information.

Currently, there is no mechanism that allows you to view your usage.  Once you've used up 75% of your allotted quota, you will automatically be redirected to a notification.  Students are currently allotted 2GB of quota, while UofT staff do not have restrictions.

There could be many causes of this sort of inability to surf.

  • You might have a weak signal, though strong enough that you are still capable of connecting.  Try moving to a different location.
  • Your machine may be infected with malware.  Try using MalwareBytes to clean it up.
  • Your machine may have static entries in the network settings.  Please visit the student HelpDesk for assistance in dealing with these.

Wireless internet access is available in town-homes A, B, C, D, and E.  Other other residences are provided an ethernet port for connectivity.  It is forbidden to install a wireless router on Residence.

You can download a copy of Symantec Endpoint Protection from http://antivirus.utoronto.ca.  You will require a valid UTORid.

Computing Facilities and Services

IITS offers almost 450 student-accessible PC and Mac workstations across the Bladen Wing Labs and the Library.  Please visit this page for more information.

The University of Toronto Scarborough has taken up a new, "green" initiative, that is geared to reduce the amount of waste on campus. The only consumables allowed within the computer labs or library are drinks in dripless, hard-plastic or metal containers. Common examples are Nalgene bottles, Thermos containers, and travel mugs. Not only will this reduce waste, but will also prevent unnecessary damage to computer hardware, chairs, and desks if the bottle were to tip over. It is important to note that food is not allowed, not only because of the possibility of creating a mess at a workstation, but also that it can affect the atmosphere of those using the computer labs with unpleasant scents.

Policy Enforcement

The UTSC Student HelpDesk is tasked to enforce this policy to ensure the facility remains clean, and accessible to the UTSC Community. Constant violation of this policy will result in the suspension of your student computing account for both computers at UTSC as well as wireless access.

There are certain restrictions for some of the Computing Facilities on campus.

  • BV494 is restriced for students registered in any VPA/D/H/S courses along with students registered in LGGA30. To gain access to this room, please ask one of the Student HelpDesk Representatives. Access to the iMacs located in this room require credentials that only will grant access to the student if they are registered in the above courses in ROSI.
  • BV473 is restricted for students registered in C/D level Computer Science courses, with the exception of workstation marked with blue dots in the image below.  If you are indeed in a C or D-level CSC course and are still unable to log in, please visit the Student Helpdesk in BV487
  • BV452 is restricted to students registered in VPM courses.

BV473

Furthermore, there are times when classes are booked for use by certain classes or events. At these times, the rooms will be restriced to those individuals or students who are in these courses or events.

All UTSC students are given 400 MB of server space. This is accessible from the lab computers from your Fissure drive (the G: and W: drives on the Windows PCs or the drive on your desktop on a Mac workstation). All of these files are accessible from home.

The instructions differ depending on whether you want to access your files on a Mac or a PC.

How to access your files on a PC

To access these files from home open a Windows Explorer window (e.g. My Computer, My Documents) and in the address bar enter ftp://fissure.utsc.utoronto.ca/ as in the image below:

AddressBar

Once you hit ENTER, you'll see a login page similar to the one below. Use your UTSCid to log in.

You should now see the same files as you do in your My Documents folder on the campus computers.

How to access your files on a Mac

To access your files on a Mac you will need a third-party FTP software such as Cyberduck. To connect to Fissure you will need to establish a connection with the following settings:

  • Connection Type: SFTP (secure FTP)
  • Server Address: fissure.utsc.utoronto.ca
  • Port: 22
  • Username: Your UTSCid
  • Password: Your UTSCid password

If you open a document within a web browser (Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer) and accidentally clicked 'Save' rather than 'Save As', you would have most likely saved the file in temporary storage, that is purged upon logout. The file should be retrievable as long as you do not log off. Please ask the Student HelpDesk for assistance in retrieving the file, though no one will guarantee its recovery.
